Quilty Boot Camp: How to Cut Strips Accurately

| Quilty | 350

Don’t you hate it when your strips have “elbows”? Wanting to be a better strip cutter? We show you how to cut strips accurately. Mary’s Quilt Emeralds (hanging behind her) is featured in the March/April issue of Love of Quilting.  Emeralds’ digital pattern is available at ShopQuilty.com.  Many of the notions shown on Quilty are available at ShopQuilty.com. Mary uses two rulers, a basic rotary cutting ruler and the Square Up ruler, to ensure straight cuts on her fabric.

  1. I have watched the video on eliminating elbows, but I don’t “get” how you were using the “square up” ruler. What were you squaring up? Were you squaring up with the stripe on the fabric? What was the square up ruler in line with?

I am an elbow maker and really want to correct my technique. Thank you for any help you can give me. Jan

    • It was lined up with the bottom edge of the fabric. It is more accurate to add a square up ruler than to use the lines on your cutting mat.
