7 Starting Tips from Pat C.

Dear newbie quilter,

1. I would suggest that you take a class for beginners from a qualified instructor. Talk to other quilters; they will tell you about excellent instructors in your area.

2. A small project such as a baby quilt or lap quilt will provide you with instruction in the basic techniques and allow you to bring a project to completion.

3. All quilters should begin with a good rotary cutter, cutting mat and medium to large ruler.

4. Another necessary item is a quarter inch foot for your sewing machine.

5. Buy a book that you can use as a reference. A book I started with was Carol Doak's book My First Quilt Book (www.caroldoak.com). It was an excellent resource as a beginning quilter. Especially late at night when I wanted to know how to do something.

6. Do not be afraid to ask questions at your local quilt shops, the staff is always helpful.

7. Do not forget to stock up on chocolate before beginning your first project.

Good luck and happy stitching,

Pat C.
