Special QNNtv City and Guilds Reports from Chris and Maureen
Our reporter from the Channel Islands, Maureen Pinwill, has just embarked on an exciting adventure. She has enrolled in a distance learning course through City & Guilds.
Incorporated in 1880, the City and Guilds of London Institute (City & Guilds) is a UK examining and accreditation body for vocational, managerial and engineering training. The range of qualifications cover the 'traditional' areas such as engineering, health and social care, hairdressing, automotive maintenance, construction, and catering, but also the more obscure such as sheep shearing, DJing, flower arranging and even door supervision. Over 1.5 million learners work towards a City & Guilds qualification every year. Altogether, the City & Guilds Group awards over one million certificates every year, has an annual turnover of £90 million and employs over 1000 people.Offering learners over 500 qualifications in 28 industry areas to learn skills that equip them to fulfill their career ambitions or enrich their leisure time. City & Guilds is a more structured learning environment than we in the united States are accustomed to.
When Maureen shared that she would be busy taking her course over the next year, we asked if she would share her experience through a regular journal here on QNNtv. Further, we thought it would be great fun for her tutor to offer her story.
Both Maureen and her soon-to-be tutor, Chris Hammacott, thought it was a splendid idea. From her home in Wales, Chris teaches students all over the world. In fact City & Guilds reaches 100 countries! Chris never knows what surprises await her when the postman arrives as her students correspond with her via the Internet and send her their creations for examination.
Follow along as Chris introduces herself and the program, and Maureen and Chris add entries as student and teacher share their experiences.
